From October 24th to October 26th, I joined the KKHTCNN Annual Symposium on Civil Engineering at KAIST University in Daejeon, South Korea. This symposium offers a place for young researchers and faculty members from 7 Universities to exchange ideas and discuss different research approaches. It was interesting to see different how variant the research approaches taken by each researcher, and how it influences the growth of Civil engineering community in general.
On the first day, I mostly interested in topics related to construction management and engineering so I attended most of the presentations in the Construction Engineering Track. I was personally interested in the presentation performed by Mr. Hao-Yang Cheng from National Taiwan University; we discussed the different possibilities made feasible by his research and the Challenges facing his approach. Afterward, I attended a presentation that caught my attention related to the Quantification of construction waste using a 3D model and Photogrammetry. Our lab members, Mr. Xin Zhou, and Mr. N. Toshi presented their topics which are, “Vibration test and system identification of Gerber-type steel plate girder bridge” and “Improving accuracy of acceleration-based drive-by road profile identification by correcting sensor inclinations” respectively.
On the second day, I attended multiple presentations related to Structural engineering as where our lab member Mr. T. Hirooka and I presented our related topics titled “Changes in Modal Frequencies and structural behavior at supports on a steel plate girder bridge caused by local damage and varying temperature” and “the benefits on Implementation of Building Information Modeling in Bridge Projects.”. After our lab members presented, we were asked a few interesting questions by the audience which widened our eyes for fascinating ideas for improving and honing our research progress.
In conclusion, I think this symposium greatly broadened the horizon of participants in related research fields and I believe the KKHTCNN symposium will keep going strong every year and foster brilliant minds to the advancement of professional Civil Engineering visions.
