2017/12/09 Report of the 8th International Conference on Science and Engineering 2017

Presenter: Takuya Mimasu, Syunsuke Nakajima(M1)
Date: Dec. 9th-10th, 2017
Venue: Yangon Technological University, Yangon, Myanmar
Author: Takuya Mimasu

ICSE 2017 is the 8th International Conference on Science and Engineering. Experts and researchers in the wide research field including infrastructures participate in the conference. I presented a research entitled “Low Pass Filter Supported System Identification of a Long Span Steel Arch Bridge”. This research topic is relevant to the field experiment conducted this June in Myanmar. Mr. Nakajima also presented a research entitled “A Field Experiment for Extracting Bridge Vibration Characteristics Indirectly by a Homemade Trailer”. This conference is our first time for presenting and participating in an international conference, so that was a great experience in our research life. We got so nervous about our presentation in English, but somehow we successfully completed our presentations. I felt we need to study English more in order to discuss our researches with participants and audiences. I would like to make use of this experience in the future.

Finally, I would like to appreciate Prof. Kim and our laboratory for this precious opportunity.

2017/07/22-23 Report of The 13th International Workshop on Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structures Technology (ANCRiSST)

Author: YE Xiongfei (D2)
Date: July 22- July 23, 2017
Venue: The University of Tokyo, Japan

ANCRiSST2017 was held in The University of Tokyo on July 22 and 23. The Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structures Technology (ANCRiSST) which was established in 2002 and currently consists of 24 research institutes aims to assess the current progress of smart materials and structures technology and to develop synergies among researchers in various disciplines from different countries for joint research projects that are of such scope and magnitude that cannot be easily carried out by the individual centers. In this workshop, Dr. Chang and I made two presentations entitled “On Appropriate Vehicle Models for Drive-by Bridge Inspection Methods: A Laboratory Experimental Study” and “Diagnosing Damage of a PC Box Girder Based on Max-peak-time in Impact Hammer Experiment” respectively. The workshop provides activities including five keynote lectures by prominent leaders in the field, a discussion session to deliberate on future activities, parallel sessions for more than 75 papers on various topics and a technical tour to Kajima Technical Research Institute (Chofu-shi, Tokyo), Shinjuku Mitsui Building Ultra-Large TMD (Shinjuku, Tokyo); it was wonderful to learn much knowledge on the advanced technology and have friendships with various researchers. This opportunity helped me to understand more about structural information obtained by health monitoring and inspired me very much.

2017/07/17-08/04 D1 Student Lu Xuzhao attended the 2017 Asia-Pacific-Euro Summer School on Smart Structures Technology (APESS)

Author: Xuzhao Lu (D1)
Date: July 17-Aug 4, 2017
Venue: Yokohama National University, Japan

This summer I attended the APESS program held in Yokohama National University. The summer school invited excellent experts in civil engineering, structural dynamics and control, smart structures technology, and structural health monitoring from all over the world to give lectures about their research progress. Besides, I also took part in the ANCRiSST held at University of Tokyo. This workshop aims to develop synergies among researchers in various disciplines that will facilitate joint research projects. The workshop provided activities including five keynote lectures by prominent leaders in the field, a discussion session to deliberate on future activities, and parallel sessions for more than 75 papers on various topics.

As for my own research field, Prof. Fujino and Prof. Su’s research expended my knowledge in vehicle-bridge interaction system. Another research that left me strong impression was Prof. Soga’s advanced sensor. His team used optical fiber to examine the change of spectrums to detect the structure condition. Besides, this sensor can automatically exclude temperature influence. What’s more, image recognition technology and robots have been tested widely in other scholars’ research. It seems that the traditional bridge engineering tends to become an interdisciplinary which combines artificial intelligence, big data processing and powerful inspection technology.

I feel so lucky to get this opportunity to get in touch with such a grand catalog at this stage. Lectures and meetings help me understand some basic knowledge in other research fields and inspire new ideas for my own research. I also learn a lot from my eminent teammates from other countries in the final group project. Collision of acute minds developed perfect work. Our cooperation won the second prize in the competition. This is absolutely an unforgiven experience in my research career.

At the conference I presented a research entitled “Energy dissipation and absorption capacity influence on experimental modal parameters of a PC girder”. As a doctoral student, this experience was a great opportunity to present my research and obtain feedback from the experts in the field. The facilities of the venue were up to the level of such a prestige conference and the location allowed me to visit Kitakyushu and its surroundings. Overall, I had a very pleasant and comfortable experience from this conference.

Data logger and cables

The vibration test was conducted on a long steel arch bridge in Myanmar so as to develop structural health monitoring techniques. In this field experiment, 3 teams consisting of vibration team, bolt team and floor beam team conducted each target experiment, and we were in charge of the vibration team. The main objective of this experiment is to measure the ambient vibrations from accelerometers installed on the bridge. The cables for sensors were installed on Jun. 19th to 20th. After that, the measurement of accelerations was conducted until in the evening on Jun. 21st. The sensors and cables were collected and the experiment was finished on Jun. 22nd. Since we obtain some sets of vibration data, we will enjoy analyzing these data.

Through this field experiment, I recognized the necessity of wireless sensors again because wiring took too much time and effort. The field experiment in a developing country was very rewarding and gave me a great stimulus. In addition, we collaborated with teachers and students from Mandalay Technological University and this experience became not only exciting but also valuable for me. I would like to make use of this experience in my research activity from now on.

I would like to appreciate Prof. Kim and our laboratory for this precious opportunity.

2017/06/05-08 Attendance and Presentation in SMART 2017 in Spain 8th Conference on Smart Structures and Materials (SMART 2017): Report of Attendance

Author: Oscar Sergio Luna Vera (D2)
Date: June 5th – 8th, 2017
Venue: "Universidad Politécnica de Madrid", Madrid, Spain

At the Civil Engineering Department

At the conference venue

This June I made a presentation about my research entitled “Energy Capacity Influence on Modal Parameters of Prestressed Concrete Box Girders” in SMART 2017. This was a joint conference that hosted two simultaneous parallel Conferences, the 8th Thematic Conference on Smart Structures and the 6th International Conference on Smart Materials and Nanotechnology in Engineering. Many researchers and engineers gathered from all around the world. For that reason, I had the chance to hear interesting researches not only from my field, civil and structural engineering, but also from different background such as mechanical and aeronautical engineering. This helped me to have a broader sense in my research purpose. After the conference, I had the chance to experience Spanish food for the very first time and became captivated with “Tapas” and “Cañas”. Moving around the university and the city of Madrid was easy since my native tongue is also Spanish. At the end of the trip, I felt grateful with my laboratory and university for the amazing opportunities and support they give me.
