16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (16th WCEE): Report of attendance
Author: Laurensia Marcelina Anggraini (M1)
Date: January 9-13, 2017
Venue: CasaPiedra Convention Center, Santiago, Chile
I got the chance to participate in the 16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, one of the
largest conference in the field of earthquake engineering. More than 4000 papers were submitted to
this conference, more than half were presented in posters while the rest were done orally. I orally
presented my paper with the title: Seismic Response Analysis of Urban Highway Viaducts under Multiple
Vehicles Subjected to Strong Earthquakes. It was under 99SS session related to Non-linear Dynamics and Wave
propagation. The conference lasted for 5 days, but I only attended it for 1 day due to time limitation. On each
day, the conference started with a keynote lecture. Unfortunately I could not really focus on the lecture due
to jet lag (there is 12-hour difference between Chile and Japan). My presentation was at 7 p.m. and by that time I
did not feel any jetlag, I felt lucky that my session was done at evening. On the discussion time after my
presentation, I got some feedbacks and suggestions regarding my study. One interesting suggestion by Prof.
Colin Taylor of University of Bristol was regarding old light-weight bridges in European countries, on which
the mass ratio of the vehicle to the bridge are relatively large. After the conference, we met Professor Kim’s
friend, Prof. Fernando of University of Concepcion who also attended the conference. We had dinner at a Chilean
food restaurant. The food was delicious, but we could not finish our food because the portion was too big for us.
Attending this conference is a good experience for me, 16th WCEE was the largest conference that I ever attended,
I got feedbacks and suggestions from other researchers, also I got the chance to eat Chilean food and do some
sightseeing in Santiago.
