2017/01/09-13 Attendance and presentation in 16th WCEE in Chile

16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (16th WCEE): Report of attendance
Author: Laurensia Marcelina Anggraini (M1)
Date: January 9-13, 2017
Venue: CasaPiedra Convention Center, Santiago, Chile

I got the chance to participate in the 16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, one of the largest conference in the field of earthquake engineering. More than 4000 papers were submitted to this conference, more than half were presented in posters while the rest were done orally. I orally presented my paper with the title: Seismic Response Analysis of Urban Highway Viaducts under Multiple Vehicles Subjected to Strong Earthquakes. It was under 99SS session related to Non-linear Dynamics and Wave propagation. The conference lasted for 5 days, but I only attended it for 1 day due to time limitation. On each day, the conference started with a keynote lecture. Unfortunately I could not really focus on the lecture due to jet lag (there is 12-hour difference between Chile and Japan). My presentation was at 7 p.m. and by that time I did not feel any jetlag, I felt lucky that my session was done at evening. On the discussion time after my presentation, I got some feedbacks and suggestions regarding my study. One interesting suggestion by Prof. Colin Taylor of University of Bristol was regarding old light-weight bridges in European countries, on which the mass ratio of the vehicle to the bridge are relatively large. After the conference, we met Professor Kim’s friend, Prof. Fernando of University of Concepcion who also attended the conference. We had dinner at a Chilean food restaurant. The food was delicious, but we could not finish our food because the portion was too big for us.

Attending this conference is a good experience for me, 16th WCEE was the largest conference that I ever attended, I got feedbacks and suggestions from other researchers, also I got the chance to eat Chilean food and do some sightseeing in Santiago.

2016/08/08-31 Report of summer stay in Queens University Belfast

Author: Souichirou HASEGAWA (M2)
Date: Aug. 8-31, 2016
Place: Belfast, UK

2016/07/24-29 WCCM XII & APCOM VI 2016: Report of attendance

Author: Su Danna (D3)
Date: July 24th – July 29th, 2016
Venue: Coex Convention & Exhibition Center, Seoul, Korea

It was a very good opportunity for me to participate in WCCM XII & APCOM VI (The 12th World Congress on Computational Mechanics & The 6th Asia-Pacific Congress on Computational Mechanics) held in Korea, and presented my research in a big international scientific meeting. About 2000 researchers and students from all over the world with different academic background gathered in the conference. The title of my presentation was “Dynamic responses of an urban highway viaduct considering vehicle-bridge interaction under strong earthquakes” and presented in the session of “Vehicle-bridge Interaction and Applications”. The session was chaired by Prof.Yeong-Bin Yang (National Taiwan University/Chongqing University, Taiwan) and Prof.Zhihai Xiang (Tsinghua University). After my presentation I have received vital comments and suggestions from prominent researchers in the field. It is a good feedback for my research and I was motivated by the comment I have received. I have attended many sessions, plenary lectures during conferences and had a very good chance to communicate and discuss with excellent students and professors from other countries. I am very happy to say that it expands my knowledge in the field. Also I attended the Wiley Workshop, learned how to select a suitable journal for article publication, refine paper to increase chances of success, submit a manuscript and survive peer review, and apply practical techniques to increase the visibility of article after it has been published. What’s more, I joined Female Researchers Networking Forum, had a discussion with many female excellent researchers about gender balance in research group, and how to gain the balance between family and work, and so on.

I would like to appreciate the professors and laboratory giving me support to participate in the conference. The support made it possible for me to get all these experience.

This year I had the privileged to attend the APESS program that was held for the first time in the University of Cambridge. The summer school aims to keep updated engineering graduate students with the latest advances in smart structure technology and its applications. Besides, collecting real-time information of structures through sensors was taught by top-notch professors from around the world in order to assess the health condition and future management of infrastructure.

I was able to experience the rich academic culture that only Cambridge can offer. Studying in the place where great minds like Newton, Darwin, Hawking and many others have been, keep me motivated to take advantage of the summer program. In addition, along not only the coursework and laboratory exercises, but also the trips and social activities carried out, I had the opportunity to meet several outstanding participants that at the end of the program became good friends and with whom I am sure we will follow international collaborative research.
